PROJECT BACKGROUND

The Boko Haram insurgency and counter-insurgent activities in Northeast Nigeria have spiraled into a deeply complex and cyclical situation affecting a number of States. This situation has been exacerbated by widespread inter-communal violence, most notably the violent clashes between herdsmen and farmers in North Central and other parts of the country Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa being the most affected. These crises have occasioned the extensive destruction of property and mass displacement of persons.

The Project on Protection of Persons of Concern through Human Rights Monitoring in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states is a collaborative effort of the National Human Rights Commission and The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The project started in 2015 with 10 project states.

The first quarter report reflects activities carried out in the BAY states of Bornu, Adamawa and Yobe under the NHRC/UNHCR IDP Protection Monitoring Project between January and March 2022. It covers 10 LGAs, in Bornu, 6 LGAs of Adamawa and 2 LGAs of Yobe.
